Rattlesnakes win every match on route to the London Youth Games.
On Thursday 26th January, The Rattlesnakes headed over to the Edmonton County Power League. Raglan ploughed through the teams that stood ahead of them and grabbed victory with firm hands. But The Rattlesnakes still haven’t won yet. The afternoon's winning team will face The Rattlesnakes on a later date. Each match played lasted only six minutes.
The team consisted of the following: Alfie H (C) Freddie (GK) Raphael G, James C, Jonathon A, Zack, Alex, and Sean.
In the boys first game, they battled out against the mighty St John’s Primary School. Rattlesnakes set out in their positions and warmed up, they knew that they needed to win; the whistle blew. The team started well, creating good chances for Alex and James - the strikers of today’s team. Team captain- Alfie H - made great crosses and tackles across the pitch, thus making a great chance to score. Alex took this opportunity, making a long run with ball, until he reached the box. He dribbled round the keeper and showed great composure to place the ball into net from a tight angle. With Sean and Jonathan defending superbly, our goalie (Freddie) worked well and was soon making an incredible save from the opposition’s strikers. The whistle was almost blown, Alex saw a gap in their defense and called for a long ball. He made the run, and he nearly got their until the St John’s goalie came to the rescue. The whistle blew, 1:0 to the great Raglan Rattlesnakes.
The first match was over but there was still much more to come. The second team we faced was Garfield. Raglan started off with control of the ball and Alex and James C were going right after the ball. Alex saved the ball from going out and went straight in for a goal. He shoots- HE SCORES!!! Alex scored the goal within the first minute- roughly around 40 seconds into the game. James took control of the ball as soon as soon as it was back in play. He raced towards Garfield’s’ goal and tried to score but missed. He was extremely close to scoring though. Alex certainly wasn’t playing around as only seconds after he scored another goal. But just to top it, James got in on the scoring action and scores The Rattlesnakes third goal. Zach tackled the player in control of the ball when Garfield was getting close to Raglans’ goal and Freddie got rid of the ball just as the game ended, securing our victory for that match. The final score for that match was 3-0 to The Rattlesnakes.
After the second game against Garfield, winning three to none by thanks to goals from Alex and James, the lads went up against Brettenham school, hoping for a game like before. As the team had been changed after their game against Garfield. The first whistle blew, Raglan missing out on kick off, however, they got into positions. As we thought, they played defensive but strong. They held onto the ball until Alex pushed forward and intercepted a short and fast pass. He paced past the other defenders, and powered the ball in the bottom left corner, clipping the hand of the goalie. GOAL!!!! From then on, the boys kept it short but played better than before. After a short while, the final whistle had blown and Raglan picked up their 3rd win out of 3.
The fourth team we played was Eversley school. Alex went for a goal but Eversleys’ goal-keeper saved it. James tried to score too but, once again Eversleys’ goal-keeper saved it. Eversley had iron defence. Eversley scored a goal. What’s more, is their goal was a header! Sean kicked the ball out as it neared Raglans’ goal again when it was back in play. The Rattlesnakes didn’t really feel like losing a match so, Alex decided he would go and score a goal- and he did! Just when you thought we couldn’t score anymore, Alex scores again! Eversley went in for another goal; Freddie picked up the ball and the siren sounded. The final score for that match was 2-1 to The Rattlesnakes.
Their next match, after beating Eversley 2:1, was against Firs farm. This was their second encounter with this team, after playing once in the league previously, this was the debut for all of our amazing rattlesnake players. The boys had forgotten about the past, it only mattered if they beat them now. The boys had kick off and played well with it. Straight from kick off, they had a shot from Sean, but this went wide. Soon after, they had a corner, they took and Zack cleared it from the area. Playing fantastically, Raph made a superb run to the goal and James crossed to him .He waited for it to bounce, then hammerd it in far post. This was literally a last second goal: the whistle blew just as he celebrated his shell shocking goal.
Now that we beat Galliard, the pressure was really on the team. Could they really win? The final team we faced was St. Johns. Raglan started off with control of the ball, and launching himself right in, Alex had scored the first goal. Alex was playing extremely well in this match. James went in for a goal but very sadly missed, as just as Freddie saved a goal, St. Johns scored evening the two teams out- putting even more pressure on them. St. Johns wanted to win just as bad as The Rattlesnakes did, explaining why they tried to score another goal straight after, but missed. This game went into extra time (three minutes). As soon as The Rattlesnakes heard that, Alfie H scored a goal, determined not to let this final end as a draw. St. Johns couldn’t let The Rattlesnakes win and went to try and score, but missed. The whistle blew- The Rattlesnakes Won!! The final score for that match was 2-1 to The Rattlesnakes!
After winning every single game they played, The Rattlesnakes didn’t really feel like losing. The final team we faced in the group stages was Eldon. The game just started. Five seconds in Sean scores! Sean tried to score another early goal but missed. The ball was nearing Raglans’ goal and went off. Eldon held up strong defence but the match ended. The final score for that match was 1-0 to The Rattlesnakes.
With the rattlesnakes through to the semi finals, the team had to focus if they had any chance of winning the cup. Their next game was against Galliard, this specific team had knocked out the Raglan in a previous tournament last year. The boys got ready, it was going to take some skills, strength and overall teamwork. The whistle blew, Raph had already created good chances for the boys. But Galliard’s defence was too strong, the boys had to change tactic. Firstly, they played more on the attacking side because one simple goal could separate the two great teams. Suddenly, Jonathan made a run down the wing, but then getting tackled just outside of area, the ball flew past the pitch. So, Alfie threw the ball with all his strength into the box.But - amazingly - it had slipped off the goalie’s hands and into the net. Goalllllllll!!!!!!!!! This was surely the best goal of the season! Soon after the whistle blew. What a game………Raglan into the final.
