Design & Technology

IntenT

Our vision for Design Technology education is to empower students to become creative, innovative, and problem-solving individuals who can design, make, and evaluate products that meet the needs of the present and future world. We aim to provide opportunities for students to work independently and collaboratively, using a range of digital and traditional tools and materials to design, make and evaluate a range of products. Through this curriculum, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of how design technology shapes our world, and how to use this knowledge to make a positive impact in the future.

Implementation

Design technology is a crucial subject that enables students to develop their problem-solving skills, creativity and critical thinking. The school aims to provide high-quality lessons that are engaging and challenging for students, with a focus on the Iterative design process. Our DT curriculum is structured where a unit of work is taught once every term, with each class teacher leading the sessions.

For Early Years, our lessons will focus on developing students' fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness through simple design tasks. We will also introduce basic concepts such as shape, colour, and texture and explore different materials. Students will begin to explore simple tools such as saws and hammers.

In Key Stage 1, we will build on the foundation laid in Early Years and introduce more complex design tasks that require critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These tasks will focus on designing products that meet specific criteria, using a range of materials and components. Students will learn about food, textiles and structures and mechanisms.

In Key Stage 2, students will take on more challenging design tasks, such as designing and building mechanical systems and electronic circuits. Students will continue to develop their understanding of food, textiles and structures and mechanisms. We will also introduce basic CAD skills, allowing students to create 2D and 3D designs.  Throughout all stages, students will be encouraged to work collaboratively, sharing ideas and expertise to solve problems and create innovative solutions.

Overall, our DT curriculum aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By using the Iterative design process, students will learn to develop and refine their designs, testing and evaluating them at every stage. Our lessons will be hands-on and practical, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world contexts.
