Maths

IntenT

At Raglan, we believe that Maths is essential to everyday life. We intend to give all children the ability to reason mathematically to provide a foundation for understanding the world. We strive to have confident and literate mathematicians that are able to navigate the challenges of Maths in everyday life.

Our curriculum is designed to support a whole-group mastery approach and is consistent with the aims and objectives of the National Curriculum. We aim to ensure pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics through a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Raglan, we follow the White Rose progression and schemes of learning to deliver Maths lessons from Early Years to Year 6. This approach places the emphasis on mastery to build flexible learning with a depth of understanding the key concepts.

Children will develop their conceptual understanding, as well as the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.  There is a daily emphasis on reasoning and problem-solving to apply the skills they learn. The children apply their knowledge to a range of different contexts where they develop an argument, provide justification or proof using mathematical language. Pupils should make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.

In Maths lessons children will:

Mathematical development in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) relates to the Development Matters document and the Early Learning Goals, set out in the Statutory Framework for the EYFS alongside the Mathematics programme of study. This is aligned with the White Rose progression. Well-planned sequences of learning are taught to the whole class. Purposeful focus activities enable pupils to apply their mathematical skills and understanding in order to have meaningful conversations with peers and adults using mathematical vocabulary. Practitioners place key emphasis on manipulatives to introduce new mathematical concepts within lessons following the whole school CPA approach.

Curriculum Enrichment

Y6 boroughwide Maths challenge

During the school year, some Y6 children had the opportunity to compete with other local schools in a Maths competition. The children had a great day solving different problems and showed great collaboration skills througout the day.

Here are some examples of the problems the children had to solve. Have a go at solving them yourself.
