MFL

IntenT

At Raglan, we view studying a language as an entitlement for pupils regardless of their background and ability.  Learning a language provides an opening to other cultures, fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of multicultural Britain and the wider world.

Raglan pupils are first exposed to Spanish, our chosen language, in Year 3. Lessons are purposefully designed to be an engaging, fun introduction to language learning with the aim that pupils foster an interest and appreciation for language learning. In Spanish lessons, children develop essential communication skills: both speaking and listening. Carefully sequenced lessons enable our pupils to understand that languages have a different grammatical structure to their own and prepare them for further language study in key stage 3.

Implementation

Our MFL curriculum has been developed to focus on the three key pillars of language learning: phonics, grammar and vocabulary.  Across the key stage, children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around stimulating, age-appropriate topics and themes. As children progress, there are planned opportunities for the children to revisit key grammatical structures, vocabulary and phonic knowledge in order to develop mastery. The MFL curriculum is supported by the Language Angels scheme. The scheme has been adapted to suit the needs of our children and  accompanying lesson plans are designed to meet all the targets of the KS2 programme of study.  These have been broken down to provide specific targets for each year group to ensure language progression over the four years.

MFL is taught by our specialist  Spanish teacher who provides high-level modelling of the language and places emphasis on the children developing their accent and intonation.  Children have many opportunities to practise manipulating the language through role-play and paired activities. Adaptive teaching, as well as carefully planned lessons and resources, ensure that children at all levels and needs are supported. Children are exposed to stories, songs and games which complement the lessons and they develop an intercultural understanding of the Hispanic world which provides the context to their lessons.
